About Generator & Backup
An independent publisher covering home backup power, written by the owner, funded by Amazon commissions, and explicit about the limits of what we know.

What this site is
Generator & Backup covers one problem: keeping a house running when the power goes out. Portable, dual-fuel and inverter generators; battery power stations and solar kits; and the transfer switches, interlock kits, inlet boxes and cords that actually connect a generator to a house.
It is organized around the reader's problem rather than around a product catalog. Most people arrive here not wanting a generator but wanting the refrigerator to stop dying every winter, or the well pump to keep working, or the sump pump to keep the basement dry. So the site starts from the load and works forward to the machine.
The flagship is the load calculator. It exists because not one of the eleven competitor pages we examined when planning this site had a working one, and because sizing is the decision that determines everything else.
Who writes it
Every page is written by Mike M., owner, iron mako media. Mike M. is the hands-on owner behind Iron Mako Media, the independent publisher of Generator & Backup. Every pick here is chosen against published criteria — running and starting watts on each fuel, runtime, outlet configuration, transfer-switch fit and warranty terms — not vendor copy. We do not operate a test lab, and where a pick rests on published specifications and owner reports rather than our own bench time, the page says so.
Who publishes it
Generator & Backup is published by Iron Mako Media, an independent publisher of equipment reference sites. You can find the publisher at ironmakomedia.com.
There is no office to visit and no phone line, which is why neither appears anywhere on this site — we are not going to invent contact details. Email reaches us: contact@generatorandbackup.com, and we read everything that arrives.
How the site makes money
Amazon commissions. We earn from qualifying purchases made through links here, at no extra cost to you. No manufacturer pays for placement, provides product, or sees a page before it publishes, and the commission has no bearing on ranking or on what a review says.
The full detail, including why Amazon rather than brand-direct programs, is on the affiliate disclosure page. The editorial rules that keep the two separate are in the editorial policy.
The three rules this site runs on
- 1No invented numbers. Every specification is the manufacturer's published figure or a figure from a cited published chart, retrieved programmatically rather than retyped. Where two sources disagree we show both. Where nobody publishes a figure we say so rather than estimating it.
- 2No testing claims. We do not operate a test lab and never say we do. Our methodology sets out exactly what we do instead, and why we think reading a spec sheet carefully is more useful than pretending to have run nine 250 lb generators.
- 3No stale prices. Prices come from a live daily feed with the check date attached. Past 48 hours every figure disappears rather than going stale — the failure mode is silence, never an old number. We publish no price in prose anywhere on the site.
Corrections
If we have a figure wrong, tell us: contact@generatorandbackup.com or the contact form. A link to the page and the figure you think is wrong is the fastest route to a fix. We correct errors and note substantive changes — the policy is in the editorial policy.
Questions people actually ask
Who writes Generator & Backup?
Every page is written by Mike M., the hands-on owner behind Iron Mako Media. We claim no licenses, certifications or trade credentials, because none were earned for this purpose — if a credential is not stated on this page, we do not have it.
Do you test the generators you recommend?
No. We do not operate a test lab and never claim to. Every specification on the site is the manufacturer's published figure or comes from a cited published chart, and our contribution is a careful reading of those figures against what a house actually demands.
How does Generator & Backup make money?
Amazon commissions on qualifying purchases made through links on the site, at no extra cost to you. No manufacturer pays for placement, provides product, or previews a page, and the commission has no bearing on ranking or on what a review says.
Why is there no phone number or address?
Because there is no premises and no phone line, and we are not going to invent either. Email is the contact route and we read everything that arrives.
