The short answer
Connecticut Electric's EGSPI50 is the best-engineered inlet box here: 50 amp, NEMA 3R rainproof, prewired with 6-inch pigtails so termination happens in a junction box rather than inside a cramped enclosure, and a spring-loaded door that closes itself when the cord is out. For 30 amps, Reliance Controls' PB30 is powder-coated steel and matches the Reliance switches most electricians install. SURAIELEC's boxes are roomier to wire but publish no safety listing.
An inlet box is the weatherproof receptacle on your exterior wall that your generator cord plugs into, feeding a transfer switch or a generator breaker inside. It is a simple product with three specifications that matter.

One: enclosure rating, because it lives outdoors for decades
NEMA 3R is the rainproof rating you want, and every box here publishes it. What differs is how the box behaves when the cord is not plugged in — which is 99.9% of its life.
Connecticut Electric's EGSPI50 publishes a spring-loaded door that closes itself when the cable is removed. That is the detail that decides whether a box is dry in twenty years, because a cover you have to remember to close is a cover that is sometimes open in a storm.
VEVOR's kits publish a flip cover, which is adequate and less robust. SURAIELEC publishes an extra-large cover that closes over a connected cord properly, which cheap boxes often do not.
Two: connector type, which must match your cord exactly
| Box | Rating | Receptacle / plug | Matching cord end |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reliance PB30 | 30 A | Standard 30 A inlet | L14-30R |
| SURAIELEC PIB30B | 30 A / 7,500 W | NEMA L14-30P | L14-30R |
| Connecticut EGSPI50 | 50 A | CS6375 / SS2-50P | SS2-50R |
| SURAIELEC PIB50B01 | 50 A / 12,000 W | NEMA SS2-50P | SS2-50R |
| VEVOR 30 A kit | 30 A | Matched to its cord | Included |
| VEVOR 50 A kit | 50 A | Matched to its cord | Included |
The simplest way out of this: buy a matched kit. VEVOR's 30 and 50 amp kits include the cord and the inlet box together, both ETL certified, and cannot be mismatched. That is why they rank highly here despite value-brand construction.
Three: how easy it is to wire, which is labor cost
Your electrician charges by the hour, and a cramped inlet box is where conductors get nicked and time gets spent.
Connecticut Electric's 6-inch pigtails are the best answer: the box arrives prewired, so the splice happens in a junction box with room to work rather than inside the enclosure. Connecticut states this makes installation easier, and it is the kind of claim that shows up on the invoice.
SURAIELEC's boxes publish an extra-large cover and expanded internal capacity, with cable entry holes designed to keep debris out. Both are genuine install advantages. VEVOR's boxes are pre-drilled with a detachable plug, which is also easier than drilling on site.
Reliance's PB30 is not pre-drilled, which is its one practical drawback against the cheaper boxes — though powder-coated steel rather than plastic is worth more over twenty years.
Certification: the gap worth knowing about
VEVOR publishes ETL certification on both its kits. Reliance Controls and Connecticut Electric are established electrical manufacturers whose products are standard in this category.
SURAIELEC's listings publish no UL or ETL listing. The boxes are roomier and better-featured than the Reliance equivalent and we rank them lower for this reason alone — a component in your home's permanent wiring is where third-party certification is most worth having, and it is a fair thing to hold against an otherwise good product.
Wire sizing, and the one listing that helps
SURAIELEC's 50 amp box publishes compatibility with 4-6 AWG wire, which is genuinely useful information: it tells your electrician the box will physically accept the conductors the run requires. Most inlet box listings say nothing about wire size, which means finding out on installation day.

Questions people actually ask
What is a generator power inlet box?
The weatherproof receptacle mounted on your exterior wall that your generator cord plugs into, feeding a transfer switch or a generator breaker inside. It is what lets you connect a generator without running a cord through a window or door.
What is the best generator inlet box?
Connecticut Electric's EGSPI50 for a 50 amp installation: NEMA 3R rainproof, prewired with 6-inch pigtails so termination happens in a junction box, and a spring-loaded door that closes itself when the cord is out. Reliance Controls' PB30 is the standard 30 amp choice.
Do I need an inlet box if I have a transfer switch?
Usually yes, and this is a common misunderstanding — they are not alternatives. The inlet box is where the cord plugs in; the transfer switch prevents back-feeding. Some switches, such as Reliance's 306A and A510A, offer an integrated inlet, which removes the need for a separate box.
What rating should an inlet box have?
NEMA 3R is the rainproof rating to look for, and every box here publishes it. The more revealing difference is what happens when no cord is connected — a spring-loaded self-closing door keeps the box dry for decades where a cover you have to remember does not.
Which 50 amp inlet matches my cord?
A 50 amp house inlet is usually SS2-50P or CS6375, which mates with an SS2-50R cord end. A NEMA 14-50R inlet needs a different cord entirely. Confirm both the generator end and the house end against your actual hardware, or buy a matched cord-and-box kit.
Can I install an inlet box myself?
In most US jurisdictions, no — it is permanent wiring feeding your panel, which is licensed work requiring a permit and an inspection. Choosing the right box is your job; installing it is your electrician's.
