Generator Maintenance Schedule
A backup generator's failure mode is not wear. It is sitting unused for a year and then refusing to start.

The short answer
- 1Every few months: run it under load for 30 minutes. This is the item that matters most.
- 2Every fill: add fuel stabilizer to gasoline. STA-BIL states its storage product keeps fuel fresh up to 24 months.
- 3Annually: oil, air filter and spark plug. Check the starting battery before winter.
- 4Before storage: run the carburetor dry if the machine has a fuel shutoff, or stabilize the fuel in it.
Generator maintenance advice is usually written for machines in regular use, with intervals in running hours. A home backup generator may accumulate ten hours in a year, so hours-based intervals barely apply — and the failure that actually strands people has nothing to do with wear.
The real failure mode
Stale fuel. Modern pump gasoline contains ethanol, which draws moisture from the air; the fuel oxidizes and leaves gums and varnish in the tiny passages of a carburetor. Twelve months is enough. The generator does not break — it simply will not start, discovered at the worst possible moment.
Everything in the schedule below is aimed at that, in order of how much difference it makes.
The quarterly test run: the single most valuable habit
Run it under load — not idling — for about half an hour, every few months. Four things happen:
- Fresh fuel circulates through the carburetor, displacing what has been sitting.
- The starting battery charges, on electric-start machines.
- The engine reaches operating temperature, which drives off moisture in the crankcase.
- You find out whether it works while that is still merely inconvenient.
If you have a transfer switch, running the actual essential circuits is the best test, because it also verifies the connection and tells you whether your furnace's control board is happy with the generator's power quality. That last one is worth knowing in October rather than January.
Fuel: the things to actually do
Fuel practice, in order of value
- Stabilizer in every fill
- Up to 24 months (STA-BIL claim)
- Rotate stored fuel
- Annually, even with stabilizer
- Fuel shutoff before storage
- Runs the carburetor dry
- Or run on propane
- Sidesteps the problem entirely
A fuel shutoff is a design feature rather than a maintenance action, and it is the best one available for standby duty. WEN publishes it across its inverter range.
On that last row: if your generator is dual fuel, running it on propane removes this entire category of maintenance. Propane does not degrade, does not absorb moisture, and leaves no varnish. For a machine that sits unused, that is the strongest practical argument for dual fuel there is — see is a dual fuel generator worth it.
Annual items
Oil. Follow your manual for the interval and grade. On a standby machine the calendar matters more than the hours, because oil absorbs moisture sitting in a cold crankcase. Most manuals also specify a much earlier first change after the initial break-in hours.
Air filter and spark plug. Annual is a reasonable default for standby duty. A model-specific tune-up kit makes this a twenty-minute job rather than a parts-sourcing project — Honda's EU2200i kit publishes the Honda part numbers for the air filter, outer filter and spark plug along with the oil, which removes compatibility guesswork entirely.
The starting battery, on electric-start machines, before winter specifically. Cold reduces battery capacity and makes the engine harder to turn, so a battery that was marginal in autumn fails in a freeze. DuroMax's iH series includes a battery tender to keep it charged, which solves the problem by design.
The maintenance shelf
Stabilizer for every fill; a model-specific tune-up kit so the annual service is not a shopping trip; a vented can so refueling is not a spill.
The features that reduce maintenance by design
Worth knowing when you are still choosing a machine, because these turn maintenance from discipline into a property of the hardware:
| Feature | What it solves | Who publishes it |
|---|---|---|
| Fuel shutoff | Runs the carburetor dry before storage | WEN inverter range |
| Battery tender | Starting battery dead on the day | DuroMax iH series |
| Hour meter | Makes intervals followable | Most brands |
| Intelligauge | Voltage, hertz and run hours | Champion |
| Dual fuel | Removes the stale-fuel problem | Most home backup machines |
A realistic annual routine
- 1Spring: test run under load. Change the oil. Check the air filter.
- 2Summer: test run under load. Top up and stabilize stored fuel; rotate anything over a year old.
- 3Autumn: test run under load. Replace the spark plug. Check and charge the starting battery. Verify the CO alarms and their expiry dates.
- 4Winter: test run under load on a mild day. Confirm the cover, the cord and the connection are where you can find them in the dark.
Four test runs and one service a year. That is the whole commitment, and it is the difference between a generator that starts and a generator that is a 200 lb ornament.
Questions people actually ask
How often should I run my backup generator?
Under load for about half an hour every few months. It circulates fresh fuel through the carburetor, charges the starting battery, drives moisture out of the crankcase, and most importantly tells you the machine works while that is still merely inconvenient to discover.
Why won't my generator start after sitting for a year?
Almost always stale fuel — gums and varnish in the carburetor, or separated ethanol and water in the tank. Fuel stabilizer added while the fuel was fresh prevents it; a fuel shutoff that runs the carburetor dry before storage prevents it better.
How often does a generator need an oil change?
Follow your manual's interval, and on a standby machine treat the calendar as more binding than the hours, because oil absorbs moisture sitting in a cold crankcase. Most manuals also specify a much earlier first change after the initial break-in hours.
Does running on propane reduce generator maintenance?
Yes, substantially. Propane does not oxidize, absorb moisture or leave varnish, so the stale-fuel failure mode disappears and combustion is generally cleaner. For a machine that sits unused most of the year, this is the strongest practical argument for dual fuel.
What maintenance does a generator need before winter?
Check and charge the starting battery — cold reduces its capacity and makes the engine harder to turn, so a marginal battery fails in a freeze. Also replace the spark plug, stabilize stored fuel, and confirm the CO alarms work and have not expired.
Should I store my generator with fuel in it or empty?
If it has a fuel shutoff, use it to run the carburetor dry — that is the best option. Otherwise store it with stabilized fuel rather than old untreated fuel. Running the tank down to nothing but leaving untreated residue in the carburetor is the worst of both.
