Editorial policy

The rules that keep what we recommend separate from what we earn, and what happens when we get something wrong.

Last updated

Independence

  • No paid placement. No manufacturer, retailer or agency can buy a position, a score or a mention. There is no rate card because there is nothing for sale.
  • No review units. We do not accept product from manufacturers. We have nothing to return and nothing to feel obliged about.
  • No pre-publication review. No manufacturer sees a page before it publishes, and nobody gets to request a change to a published one except by showing us a factual error.
  • No sponsored content. Nothing on this site is paid for by a third party, and there are no advertorials.
  • Commission does not affect ranking. Where Amazon is cheaper than a brand-direct option, Amazon is the link, even if the direct program pays more.

What we refuse to publish

  • Fabricated reviews or testimonials. This site has no customer reviews because it has no customers — it is a publisher. We will never invent a quote, a name, a rating or a review count, for any reason, including filling a layout.
  • Testing claims we cannot support. The words "we tested", "lab tested", "field tested" and "expert-tested" do not appear here. See our methodology.
  • Invented specifications. Where a manufacturer does not publish a figure, we name the gap rather than estimating it.
  • Prices in prose. Every price comes from a live feed with its check date; none is typed into a page.
  • Invented credentials. The about page states what the author is. Anything not stated there, we do not have.
  • False urgency. No "limited time", no "best price anywhere", no countdowns. We cannot verify a deal and will not pretend to.
  • Stock photographs presented as our own. Ambient and illustrative imagery is used plainly as illustration and never implies this site photographed a unit, owns one, or completed a job.

Corrections

We get things wrong. When we do: email contact@generatorandbackup.com or use the contact form, with a link to the page and the figure you believe is incorrect.

  1. 1We check the claim against its original source.
  2. 2If it is wrong, we correct it and update the page's last reviewed date, which is real stored data rather than a build timestamp.
  3. 3Where a correction materially changes a recommendation, we say so on the page rather than editing quietly.
  4. 4Where the original source itself is wrong or has changed, we say which source and what changed.

Review cadence

Prices are re-checked daily by an automated process and every page shows the date its figures were last verified. Content is reviewed when the underlying specification changes, when a product is discontinued, or when a reader shows us an error — not on a fixed calendar, because a date-stamped review that changed nothing is theater.

Safety content

Safety guidance on this site is attributed to its published source — the US Consumer Product Safety Commission for carbon monoxide and generator placement, FoodSafety.gov for food safety timings, and manufacturers' own statements for their equipment. We add no safety advice of our own invention, and safety callouts are styled deliberately differently from product content so they can never be mistaken for an advert.

We also do not describe how to perform licensed electrical work. Transfer switches, interlock kits and inlet boxes are permanent wiring on the supply side of a panel; this site covers what to buy and your electrician installs it.

Every commercial outbound link is marked `rel="sponsored nofollow"`, routed through our own resolver so the tracking tag lives in exactly one place, and preceded on the page by a visible disclosure. The full funding explanation is on the affiliate disclosure page.

Questions people actually ask

Do manufacturers pay to appear on this site?

No. There is no paid placement, no sponsored content and no rate card, because nothing is for sale. We also do not accept review units, so there is nothing to return and nothing to feel obliged about.

Why are there no customer reviews on this site?

Because we have no customers — we are a publisher, not a retailer. We will never invent a quote, a reviewer name, a rating or a review count, including to fill a layout.

How do I report an error?

Email contact@generatorandbackup.com or use the contact form, with a link to the page and the figure you believe is wrong. We check it against the original source, correct it if it is wrong, and update the page's last reviewed date.

How often is content updated?

Prices are re-checked daily by an automated process and every page shows the date its figures were last verified. Content is reviewed when a specification changes, a product is discontinued, or a reader shows us an error — not on a fixed calendar.

Does affiliate commission affect what you recommend?

No. Where Amazon is cheaper than a brand-direct option, Amazon is the link even if the direct program would pay more. Buyer-first beats commission.
