Best Portable Generators for the Money

Value means running watts per dollar with the compromises named. Every pick here cuts something — we say what.

The short answer

The WEN DF8000X is the best value in home backup: 6,500 running watts on gasoline, dual fuel, CO shutdown, a transfer-switch-ready L14-30R and a published 10.5 hour half-load runtime, at a price below most gasoline-only machines. For maximum running watts per dollar the WEN DF1100T's 8,300 running watts is unmatched — but it has no CO shutdown and its 30 A twist-lock is a 120 V-only L5-30R, which will not fit a standard 240 V transfer switch.

Value in this category is not simply the lowest price per watt. A machine that is cheap because it omits the 240 V outlet you need, or the CO shutdown, or a brand's service network, is not cheap — it is a different product. So every pick below states its compromise.

Why the DF8000X wins on value rather than the cheapest machine

Because it is the cheapest machine with nothing important missing. It publishes dual fuel (8,000 surge / 6,500 rated on gasoline, 7,200 / 5,850 on propane), WEN's Watchdog CO shutdown, a 10.5 hour half-load runtime on a 6.7 gallon tank, a wheel kit, and — critically — a transfer-switch-ready L14-30R plus an RV-ready TT-30R.

6,500 running watts is also the right size for a large proportion of houses. Using EWEB's published appliance figures, a fridge, a furnace blower, a well pump, a sump pump and lighting totals around 3,500 running watts. The DF8000X covers that with substantial headroom and does not charge you for capacity a 30 A transfer switch could not pass anyway.

The L5-30R trap, which is the most expensive mistake on this page

That is not a reason to avoid the DF1100T — 8,300 running watts for its price is genuinely the best watts-per-dollar figure in this registry. It is a reason to know what you are buying.

When paying more is the better value

Three cases where the cheapest option costs more over time:

  • No CO shutdown. The WEN DF1100T and the DuroMax XP13000EH omit it. It is a backstop rather than a primary protection, but adding it later is impossible, and the price gap to a machine that includes one is usually small.
  • Gasoline only. The Generac 8,125 W is a good machine with no propane option, and propane's indefinite storage is the feature that stops a stored generator failing to start. Dual fuel usually costs little more.
  • Service network. Generac's dealer and parts network is the widest in the category; WEN's and DuroStar's are thinner. Five years in, that matters more than the original price difference.

#ad Price as of October 5, 2026; it may have changed since. How we are funded.

What is good

  • 6,500 running watts with CO shutdown, dual fuel and a proper L14-30R, for the price of a gasoline-only machine
  • 10.5 hours at half load is better runtime than WEN's larger DF1100T
  • The TT-30R makes it an RV generator as well, which widens its usefulness between outages

What is not

  • 6,500 running watts rules out central air
  • 340cc working near its rating will be audible — WEN does not publish a dB figure for this model
  • No remote start

What is good

  • 6,500 running watts is genuinely enough for a fridge, furnace blower, sump pump, lights and electronics — the realistic essential-circuit set

#ad Price as of October 5, 2026; it may have changed since. How we are funded.

What is good

  • 8,300 running watts for well under a thousand dollars is the best watts-per-dollar in this roundup
  • Fuel selection by dial — simple and nothing to misconfigure
  • The 14-50R means it can feed a 50A inlet directly

What is not

  • No CO shutdown on this model — the newer DF8000X and TF-1450X have WEN's Watchdog sensor, this one does not
  • 8.5 hours at half load is the shortest runtime of the big dual-fuel machines here
  • The 30A twist-lock is L5-30R (120V only), not L14-30R — check your transfer switch inlet before buying

  • Gasoline: 11,000 surge / 8,300 running watts (manufacturer)

#5 · Best price per peak watt

The value pick in DuroMax's 13kW line: copper windings and CO shutoff for less than the older EH typically costs.

$1,079.00View on Amazon40% off

#ad Price as of October 5, 2026; it may have changed since. How we are funded.

What is good

  • Copper windings rather than aluminum is a genuine longevity difference, and DuroMax publishes it
  • Four household GFCI outlets plus both 240V outlets covers cord-only use and transfer-switch use equally
  • Adds the CO Alert shutdown the older EH does not have, usually for less money

What is not

  • 245 lb is the heaviest of the 13kW DuroMax family
  • Still a conventional alternator — total harmonic distortion is not published as low-THD, so treat sensitive electronics carefully

  • 13,000 peak watts (manufacturer)

#ad Price as of October 5, 2026; it may have changed since. How we are funded.

What is good

  • 136 lb is genuinely one-person movable on a flat driveway, which changes how practical a generator is
  • CO shutdown, remote start and a propane hose all included at the bottom of the dual-fuel range
  • 5,300 running watts covers a fridge, furnace blower, sump pump and lighting with headroom

What is not

  • Not enough for a well pump plus a furnace plus a fridge simultaneously — run the sizing math first
  • 4.7-gallon tank means more refueling than the big machines
  • No 50A outlet, so a 50A transfer switch is out

Questions people actually ask

What is the best value portable generator?

The WEN DF8000X: 6,500 running watts, dual fuel, CO shutdown, a transfer-switch-ready L14-30R and a published 10.5 hour half-load runtime, at a price below many gasoline-only machines of similar output. It is the cheapest machine with nothing important missing.

Which generator gives the most watts per dollar?

The WEN DF1100T at 8,300 running watts on gasoline. Two caveats that matter: it has no CO shutdown, and its 30 amp twist-lock is a 120 V-only L5-30R rather than the L14-30R a standard transfer switch expects.

Are cheap generators worth buying?

It depends entirely on what makes them cheap. A machine that is cheap because it has a thinner service network may be fine; one that is cheap because it lacks the 240 V outlet you need, or a CO shutdown, is a different product rather than a bargain.

Do I need to spend more for a dual fuel generator?

Usually very little, and it is worth it. Propane stores indefinitely while gasoline degrades within months, and stale fuel is the most common reason a stored generator will not start. The output penalty on propane is roughly 10%.

Is a bigger generator better value?

Not generally. A 30 amp transfer switch caps delivery at about 7,200 watts no matter how large the generator, so capacity beyond that is unusable without a more expensive 50 amp installation. Bigger machines also burn more fuel at light load and weigh considerably more.
