They have the machine. These are the things they probably have not bought yet — and the fitment questions to settle first.

The short answer

  • Needs no information: fuel stabilizer, a spill-proof fuel can, a battery CO alarm. All useful to any generator owner.
  • Needs the frame size: a running cover, so they can use it in the storm that caused the outage.
  • Needs the model: a maintenance kit, a wheel kit, a parallel kit or a conversion kit.
  • Needs their fuel setup: a two-stage propane regulator and hose.

Someone who owns a generator has solved the big problem and almost certainly not the small ones. The useful gifts here are the things that sit in the gap between buying a generator and actually being ready to use it — and most owners have not closed that gap.

This list is organized by how much you need to know about their machine, because that is the real constraint on buying accessories as a gift.

Safe without asking anything

Three things fit every generator owner regardless of what they own.

Fuel stabilizer. Untreated gasoline degrades within months and a gummed carburetor is the single most common reason a stored generator will not start. STA-BIL states its storage product keeps gasoline fresh up to 24 months. Around fourteen dollars, and it addresses a failure the owner does not know is coming.

A spill-proof fuel can. They refuel in the dark, in weather, near a hot engine. Scepter's can publishes a controllable flow rate with an integrated vent — the vent is what stops the glugging — and SureCan's rotates a spout out of the bottom so a full 40 lb can never has to be inverted. Either is a real improvement on a generic can.

A battery carbon monoxide alarm. Most houses have only a plug-in alarm, which is dead during the outage. For someone who runs a generator, this addresses the risk that actually kills generator owners. Twenty dollars.

Scepter 5 Gallon Gas Can, SmartControl Spout
Scepter 5 Gallon Gas Can, SmartControl Spout

The right fuel can: vented, controllable and fast, which matters because the dangerous part of a generator is usually refueling it.

Needs one measurement: a running cover

This is the best gift on the page for most generator owners, because it solves the problem they discover the first time they need the machine: outages come with storms, and a generator cannot run in rain without protection — and cannot be moved into a garage or under a tarp to solve it.

What you need to know: the generator's frame perimeter or dimensions, and that it is an open-frame machine. GenTent's universal cover publishes a fitment range of 78 to 104 inches of frame perimeter; Porch Shield publishes 36 x 28 x 20 inches. Those dimensional specifications are far more reliable than the wattage ranges some covers use.

None of these fit an enclosed inverter generator, so check that first — if their machine has a plastic case rather than an exposed engine in a tube frame, this is the wrong gift.

Running covers — measure the frame first

Open-frame generators only. A cover addresses water, not carbon monoxide: placement rules do not change because the machine is covered.

Needs the exact model

These are excellent gifts and they are model-specific, so you need the make and model number — usually on a label on the frame or the control panel.

A maintenance kit. Honda's EU2200i tune-up kit includes the spark plug, air filter, outer filter and oil with the Honda part numbers published, which means no compatibility guesswork. Having the service parts on the shelf turns an annual service from a project into twenty minutes. It only fits the EU2000i, EU2200i and EB2000i, so confirm the model.

A wheel kit, if their machine does not have one. A generator that cannot be moved easily ends up running wherever it is convenient, which is usually too close to the house. Westinghouse's kit publishes 8-inch wheels and fits the WGen2000 and WGen3600 series specifically — check the model suffix.

A parallel kit, if they own a small inverter generator and want more output. Champion's ParaLINK links two Champion inverters of 2,500 watts or higher and states the pair provides enough power for two 15,000 BTU RV air conditioners. Brand-specific: it will not link a Champion to a WEN or a Honda.

A natural gas conversion kit, if they own a dual fuel machine and have a gas line. These use the carburetor's existing port and are reversible with no permanent modification — a cheap route to effectively unlimited runtime. Strictly model-specific, and the house-side gas connection is licensed work the recipient will need to arrange.

Needs to know their fuel setup

If they run a dual fuel machine on propane, a better hose is a genuine upgrade. A two-stage regulator holds output pressure steady as the tank empties, which is what stops a generator surging or stalling at low tank level — a single-stage regulator does not.

GasSaf's 10-foot unit publishes an 11 inch water column output pressure and up to 180,000 BTU, and the length lets the tank sit well clear of the hot machine. Check their generator's required inlet pressure, and note that many dual fuel machines ship with a hose already — so this is an upgrade, not a necessity.

What not to buy

  • A cord, unless you know both the generator's outlet and the house inlet. L14-30 and L5-30 look similar and are not interchangeable; 30 A and 50 A connectors are different again; and a 14-50R inlet needs a different cord from an SS2-50P one.
  • A transfer switch or interlock kit. Interlocks must match the exact panel brand, amperage and breaker spacing — published fitment ranges are as tight as 3/4 to 7/8 of an inch. Getting it wrong is nearly certain and it is licensed installation work regardless.
  • A generator cover for storage if they wanted one for running. They are different products: a storage cover is not rated for operation and will trap exhaust and block airflow.

For someone who does not yet own a generator, emergency preparedness gifts is the better list.

Questions people actually ask

What should I buy for someone who has a generator?

Fuel stabilizer, a spill-proof fuel can and a battery carbon monoxide alarm all fit any generator owner with no information needed. A running cover is the most useful gift but needs the frame measurement, and maintenance kits, wheel kits and parallel kits need the exact model.

Is a generator cover a good gift?

One of the best, because it solves the problem owners discover the first time they need the machine: a generator cannot run in rain unprotected and cannot be moved indoors to solve it. You need the frame perimeter or dimensions, and it must be an open-frame generator, not an enclosed inverter.

Can I buy a generator cord as a gift?

Not reliably without knowing both ends. L14-30 and L5-30 look similar and are not interchangeable, 30 A and 50 A connectors differ, and the house inlet type matters as much as the generator outlet. Ask, or pick something else.

What is a good maintenance gift for a generator owner?

A model-specific tune-up kit with the spark plug, air filter and oil. Honda's EU2200i kit publishes the Honda part numbers, which removes compatibility guesswork. Having the parts on the shelf is what turns an annual service into a twenty-minute job rather than a project.

Can I buy an interlock kit for someone?

No. Interlock plates must match the panel brand, its amperage and the exact spacing between the main and branch breakers — published fitment ranges are as tight as 3/4 to 7/8 of an inch. It is also licensed installation work, so it is a project for them to arrange rather than a gift.
